After a massive, caffeine aided grading session, I got to thinking- why are liberals so associated with coffee?

I mean, it's so ingrained in the public consciousness- this image of a lanky, well-dressed, probably gay guy with a latte in his hand as a liberal. Why is that? Here's my idea.

Most people who are college educated lean to the left- I mean, 80% of people who voted for Kerry in the last Presidential election had college degrees, and I'm betting the ones who didn't were those frat boys who drank, smoked pot, and cheated their way through some sort of business degree, spent half of their education stoned, and now manage a Denny's or write for some blog somewhere, like David Horowitz.

Speaking from experience, I think of two things needed for success in college- a serious work ethic and natural talent. To some extent, what you lack in one category can be made up for with a lot in the other. When you need to make up for a lack of natural talent with hard work, you need to concentrate and stay awake, and that's where the coffee comes in.

Coffee consumtion is a habit that liberals get into while they're in college- pulling all nighters, reading some papers, and it just kind of sticks with us. We need the hi-test stuff because of our resistance to caffeine evolved over four or more years of work.

Me, I'm different- coffee gives me migraines and upsets my stomach. Instead, I keep Twinnings and Bigelows in business. Hmm... maybe I ought to buy stock.
