The Angry Geologist Can't Make This Up

Today, thanks to the magic of Google Books and the New York Times, I found out that there exists out in the Pacific Ocean a tiny island nation called Niue.

The name translates to "Behold the Coconut!"

The fact I live in a world that has a place that is called "Behold the Coconut!" makes it a much happier world indeed.

Well, strictly speaking, it's not an island nation but an associated state of New Zealand. I had no idea, till I read this, that Niue meant 'behold the coconut'. It's a place I'd like to visit simply because it's remote, and hardly anyone's ever heard of it.

A habit I picked up from my father is a rainy-day pass-time ... Grab a volume of the encyclopeadia (no matter how out of date) at random, and just open it anywhere. Browsing what you find, you will invariably find something novel and interesting. The world is just full of interesting and mostly useless bits of info. :-)

I used to do that, too- but these days my only encyclopedias are at the library. I use H2G2 or Wikipedia.
